For the Ban
- Disadvantages women:
- One of the main arguments against the burqa is that it disadvantages women. It causes woman to lose their identity, which isolates them from social engagements in society in public. It makes it impossible for them to exercise and deprives them of adequate sunlight.
- The Burqa Ban protects women from pressure to wear it.
- The choice to wear it is oppressive:
- It is a choice forced upon women by muslim society.
- Many muslim women disapprove of it:
- Many women don't like wearing burqa but are pressured by other women who wear it to wear a burqa.
- Face-covering veils undermine social interaction:
- How can you establish a relationship with a person who hides in a veil?
- They are meant to make women look unappealing:
- Why would society condone something that intentionaly makes women look bad?
- Burqas can lead to rickets for babies:
- studies in England and Ireland have found that, due to a vitamin D insufficiency, which isn't received due to inaqequate exposure to the sun, the children of burqa wearers can develop rickets.
- Burqas were not mentioned by the Qur'an:
- According to Mohammed Moussaoui, the head of the French Council of the Muslim Faith, "no text prescribes the wearing of the burqa or niqab."
- If the ban was racist, then the hijab would be banned too
Against the Ban
- Banning full veil is act of discrimination and racism:
- This is bigotry against muslims.
- Discomfort is an inadequate excuse for the ban
- Many people agreed that in order to control people in a free government, you need better reasoning than "the burqa causes discomfort."
- Ban increases isolation
- Many people think that the ban can help women interact more effectively without the burqa, however, woman that are made to wear burqas, because of their families, would receive isolation in their home
- Burqa ban would worsen Anti-Muslim movements
- The bans expose the Muslim community to scorn and it increases the emphasis of Muslim's ethnice and cultural differences
- Women can be required to lift veil for security reasons:
- Women can be required to lift veils for security checks. That way they can still wear them while providing adequate security for others.
- Women in burqas aren't dangerous
- Yes, some criminals conceal their identities in a burqa; however, the women that have actual reasons to wear the burqa are not the ones that are committing these crimes. Therefore, it is unjust to target these women.
- Suicide bombers don't disguise themselves with burqas:
- Suicide bombers haven't worn burqas to hide vests or bombs. They usually just wear normal, baggy clothing.
- Ban increases tensions:
- The targeting of an indivduals groups rights encourages discrimination in other ways also.
